I asked my mom to be my portrait person. She picked the spot and what she would be doing. So here she is at her favorite spot to chant with her drum and talk to mother nature. The hardest part was her chanting, she closes her eyes a lot during it, so I ended up having to take about 300 photos. The sun was also a problem, so we moved around to find better lighting.

I like how you took your time and to different angles because of the like. I think it would have been alright to show a some with your eyes closed because that would have shown your mother in her natural setting. However I love the pictures you pick. I think the pictures show great deal, lighting is great and doesn't over power the picture. And I like how took pictures from different views and colors. Great work this week.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how your mother almost looks like she isn't really there in the first picture. I think it's a trick of the light because she is standing in such a well-lit spot compared to the pool in the background. I'm partial to your second image because it combines elements of texture, pattern, color, light, and depth of field that work well together. The pinky-reds and the yellowy-greens have a nice complimentary feel. The pattern of the ropes on the back of the drum is eye-catching, and the light just hitting your mother's face as she chant's to the sky is perfect for a sun salutation. You also followed the rule of giving your subject space to look into, which gave a nice sense of balance to this image. Great job this week.
ReplyDeleteI can smell the patchouli, but then again Darcey is in the other room. These are very nice, and I think that a few with th eyes closed wouldn't hurt either. If that's the natural way she is then I think you should capture that.

Seeing photos (yours and others) in B&W makes me think there is really something to photographing individials in B&W; maybe somehow color photos take away from seeing the real person.
ReplyDeleteI agree with others, a photo with eyes shut wouldn't have been the worst thing - I think we would have been able to see the story that she was chanting and very in the moment.
These are excellent photographs.
ReplyDeleteThe second photograph in the fourth, I think, are the best of the group. The second one, for obvious reasons, stands right out because you use the rule of thirds very well here and back lighting always adds drama to any photograph. The fourth image, I think really captures her personality though. She is smiling and it seems that she's waving you off for something you may have said. This photograph also has good composition.
I feel that the first and the third photographs, though technically good, look to staged. They look like photographs that someone would take to put in an advertisement in the back of a New Age magazine. Now, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but they don't bring out the personality of your mother.
Again, excellent work!
